Headlight restoration: clear headlight after polishing and sealing

What's included

What we do

  • Surrounding paint taped off
  • Wet sanding to remove the oxidised layer
  • Machine polishing to restore clarity
  • UV-protective sealant

Why headlights go cloudy

Modern headlight lenses are plastic with a factory UV coating. Years of sun break that coating down, and the plastic oxidises into a yellow haze that scatters light. Polishing alone only helps for a few weeks; sanding removes the damaged layer, and a UV sealant protects the fresh surface.

How we restore headlights

We clean the lens and mask the paint around it, then wet sand the lens in stages to remove the yellowed, oxidised layer. It's machine polished until clear, and a UV sealant goes on to slow the plastic yellowing again. A pair takes about an hour.

Restore or replace?

Restoration fixes haze and yellowing on the outside of the lens. It can't fix moisture or haze inside the headlight, cracks or broken seals; those need a repair or a new headlight. We'll tell you which you're dealing with before we start.

How long restored headlights last

Quick fixes like toothpaste or polishing alone only make the lens look better for a few weeks, because they don't remove the damaged layer. We wet sand the oxidised plastic away, machine polish the lens back to clarity, then seal it with a UV-protective sealant. Done properly, the result typically lasts years, especially on cars parked in the shade.

Restoration won't fix cracks, moisture inside the lens or damaged reflectors. In those cases the headlight needs replacing, and we'll tell you honestly before we start.

Common questions

How long does the result last?

With a UV sealant it typically lasts years, especially if the car is often parked in shade.

Can you fix moisture inside a headlight?

No. Moisture inside means the seal has failed, and the headlight needs repairing or replacing. Restoration only treats the outside of the lens.

Can headlight restoration be added to a detail?

Yes. It takes about an hour and can be added to any detail on the same visit.

How can I pay?

Cash, card (Visa, Mastercard), Apple Pay, Google Pay or Afterpay, paid when the job is done.

How long does headlight restoration take?

About an hour on a typical car, at your home or work.

Why do headlights go yellow?

The factory UV coating breaks down in the sun, and the plastic underneath oxidises into a yellow haze.
