Why protect a new caravan straight away?

A new caravan has a perfect finish, and it starts losing it from the first trip. Sun, road grime, bugs, black streaks and coastal salt all go to work on the gelcoat and paint, and an unprotected surface gets harder to clean every time. Protecting it before the damage starts keeps it looking new for far longer.

It's also the easiest time to do it. Older vans often need black streaks removed and oxidation polished out before they can be coated. A new van usually just needs a thorough wash and decontamination, so the job is simpler.

Warranty from day one

OptiVAN's lifetime warranty covers both the exterior and interior protection on caravans no older than 5 years. Protecting a new van means you're well inside that window and covered for the long term.

Dealer protection package or independent?

Most dealers offer a protection package when you buy a new van, and some are excellent. Others are a quick sealant applied on the yard as part of handover. Before you say yes, ask:

  • What product is used, and who makes it?
  • Is it a true ceramic coating or a sealant?
  • How is the van prepared first?
  • Who applies it, and how long does it take?
  • Is the interior included?
  • What does the warranty cover and require?

A full-size van properly coated is a full day's work or more. If it's done in an hour or two, it's probably a sealant. We explain more in caravan dealer protection packages: are they worth it?

Having it done independently means you know exactly what's going on your van, who's applying it and what the warranty covers. If you've already picked up the van without protection, it's not too late.

How we prepare a new van

New doesn't always mean clean. Vans come off the production line and through transport with:

  • Sealant smears around windows, hatches and fittings
  • Factory dust and residue
  • Transport grime, bugs and road film on the front
  • Adhesive marks from protective film and stickers

All of it is removed before the coating goes on, because a coating locks in whatever is underneath. The coating is then applied panel by panel, and the interior is cleaned and protected as part of the same package. See caravan interior protection.

What gets protected

  • Painted panels and gelcoat: front, sides, rear and roof where accessible
  • Checker plate and toolboxes
  • Decals and stripes
  • Suitable windows, hatches and light lenses
  • Inside: fabrics, carpets, curtains, benchtops, splashbacks and shower screens

New motorhomes and campers

The same applies to new motorhomes, campervans and camper trailers. See motorhome and RV paint protection.

If I could give Hot Ride ten stars, I would! The interior is now completely immaculate and looks (and smells!) like it just rolled off the showroom floor. Their attention to detail is next-level.

Common questions

When should I protect a new caravan?

As soon as you can after pick-up, ideally before the first trip. A new van needs the least preparation and is well within OptiVAN's 5-year warranty window.

Is a dealer protection package worth it?

It can be, if it's a quality coating applied properly. Ask what product is used, whether it's a coating or a sealant, how the van is prepared and what the warranty requires.

Does the warranty cover the interior?

Yes. On vans no older than 5 years, OptiVAN's lifetime warranty covers both the exterior and interior protection.

Can you protect my van at the storage yard?

Yes, as long as there's water and power near the van and room to work all the way around it.

Do new caravans need polishing before coating?

Usually not. New vans need a thorough wash and decontamination to remove factory residue, sealant smears and transport grime.
