Caravan Dealer Protection Packages: Are They Worth It?

What's usually in a new caravan protection package, the questions to ask the dealer, and how it compares with independent caravan protection.

Caravan Dealer Protection Packages: Are They Worth It?

When you buy a new caravan, there's a good chance the dealer will offer a protection package before you drive away. It might be called paint protection, exterior protection, a coating package or something similar, and it's often bundled with interior fabric protection as well. The pitch usually sounds simple: protect your investment from day one.

Paint protection on a new van is a genuinely good idea. A new van has a perfect finish, and protecting it before the sun gets to it is the easiest way to keep it that way. But not all packages are the same, and it pays to ask the right questions before you sign. This guide explains what's usually included, what to check, and how dealer packages compare with independent caravan protection.

What's usually in a dealer protection package?

Packages vary a lot between dealers and brands, but they usually include some mix of:

  • An exterior coating or sealant applied to the body.
  • Fabric or upholstery protection for the interior.
  • Sometimes a treatment for the awning or floor coverings.
  • A warranty, often with conditions such as yearly inspections or using particular wash products.
  • A maintenance kit with wash and top-up products.

The quality of the product and the care taken in applying it can range from excellent to very basic. Some dealers use a well-known coating and give the job proper time. Others apply a quick sealant on the yard as part of the handover. From the outside, both can be called a protection package.

Questions to ask before you say yes

These questions will tell you a lot about what you're actually getting.

What product is used, and who makes it? A named, reputable product made for caravans is a good sign. If the answer is vague, ask for the product name in writing.

Is it a ceramic coating, a sealant, or something else? A sealant lasts months. A true ceramic coating lasts years. They're very different things. We explain the difference in caravan ceramic coating vs wax.

How is the van prepared? Even new vans can have factory residue, sealant smears, transport grime and light marks. A proper job includes a thorough wash and decontamination before the coating goes on.

Who applies it and how long does it take? A full-size van properly coated is a full day's work or more. If it's done in an hour or two, it's probably a sealant rather than a coating.

What surfaces are covered? Walls only, or also the front, rear, windows, trims and checkerplate?

What does the warranty cover and require? Read the fine print. Some warranties only cover specific defects and require yearly paid inspections or particular products. Find out who honours the warranty if the dealer closes or you move.

Can I see a coated van? Ask to see or touch a van that's had the treatment. A good coating feels very slick and water should sheet or bead off it.

The advantages of a dealer package

  • Convenience: it's done before you collect the van, with nothing extra to organise.
  • Finance: it can often be included in the loan.
  • Timing: the van is protected from day one.

Those are real benefits. If the dealer uses a quality product, applies it properly and is upfront about what's included, a dealer package can be a perfectly good option.

Common drawbacks

  • Limited information: it can be hard to find out exactly what product is used or how it's applied.
  • Rushed application on busy yards.
  • Bundled pricing that makes it hard to compare value.
  • Warranty conditions that are easy to break without realising.
  • Financing a package means paying interest on it for the life of the loan.

Independent caravan protection: the alternative

You don't have to take the dealer's package to protect your new van. An independent installer can apply a caravan-specific coating after you pick the van up, at your home or wherever it's stored.

The advantages:

  • You know exactly what product is used and why.
  • The installer's time is spent on preparation and application, not on a sales process.
  • You can ask questions directly of the person doing the work.
  • You can choose the timing that suits you, ideally soon after delivery and before the first big trip.

The main thing to keep in mind is timing. A new van starts collecting UV, grime and black streaks from the first week it's parked outside, so try to book protection within the first few weeks. If the van has already been on a trip or two, that's fine: the preparation stage will take care of any grime or streaks. We explain how in our guide on how to remove black streaks from a caravan.

Is caravan paint protection worth it at all?

For most owners, yes. A caravan spends far more time parked in the sun than a car does, and gelcoat oxidises faster than automotive paint. Without protection, a van can start to look faded and chalky within a few summers. We explain why in our guide to caravan oxidation.

Protection keeps the finish bright, makes washing far easier and helps the van hold its value. The real question isn't whether to protect a new van, but which product, applied by whom, and what you're actually getting for your money. Already bought the package?

If you've already paid for a dealer package, look after it. Use a pH-neutral caravan wash, avoid abrasive pads and harsh degreasers, and follow any conditions the warranty sets. If you're unsure whether the coating is still working, rinse the van and watch the water. If it no longer beads or sheets off, the protection has likely worn off and the surface may need preparing and recoating.

Dealer protection package FAQs

Is new caravan protection really necessary?

A new van has a perfect finish, and protecting it early is the easiest way to keep it that way. Without protection, UV and grime start to dull gelcoat within the first few years, especially on vans stored outdoors.

Can I get protection applied after I've picked up my new van?

Yes. You don't need to take the dealer's package to protect your van. An independent installer can apply a caravan-specific coating at your home or storage yard after delivery. Ideally book it within the first few weeks.

Will declining the dealer package affect my caravan warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty on the van itself shouldn't depend on buying a paint protection package. Check your warranty documents, and ask the dealer to show you in writing if they say otherwise.

What is a caravan protection warranty?

It's a promise from the coating maker or installer that the product will perform for a set time, usually with conditions. Common conditions include using approved wash products, regular inspections and avoiding certain chemicals. Read the conditions carefully and keep records of your maintenance.

Do dealer packages include interior protection?

Often they do, such as fabric and upholstery treatments. Consider whether you actually need it, and ask what product is used and how long it lasts.

What if my van already has a dealer coating and I want it redone?

An installer can usually prepare the surface and apply a new coating. The old coating may need to be polished off first, depending on its condition. Ask your installer to assess it.

Should I finance a protection package?

It's your choice, but remember that adding it to the loan means paying interest on it over the life of the loan. Paying for protection separately can work out cheaper overall.

How do I compare a dealer package with an independent quote?

Compare the product, the preparation, the surfaces covered and the warranty conditions, not just the total price. Our guide to what affects the cost of caravan protection explains what a good quote should include.

Wrapping up

Protecting a new caravan is worth it. Whether a dealer package is the right way to do it depends on what's actually in it. Ask what product is used, how it's applied, what's covered and what the warranty requires. If the answers aren't clear, an independent, caravan-specific coating applied after delivery is a solid alternative.
