Products range from cheap options that lack quality to high-end products with durable results when applied correctly. With ceramic coatings and PPF in particular, choosing a genuine, quality product matters: poor products can harm your paint rather than protect it.

What is ceramic coating?

Ceramic coating is a liquid applied to the paint that bonds with the surface and forms a hard, glass-like layer. It gives a glossy appearance and good resistance to light scratches, and it makes the paint smooth and hydrophobic, so dirt and water are repelled.

• Hydrophobic: resists dirt, bird droppings and other contaminants.
• Protection from minor scratches: helps against light to moderate marks, but it won't stop deep scratches. That's its main limitation.

What is paint protection film?

PPF is a transparent adhesive film applied over the paint. It comes in different thicknesses and offers strong physical protection against scratches and stone chips.

• Durability: protects against the elements, but can show wear over time and needs maintenance.

How they compare

Appearance: ceramic coating gives a high-gloss finish that highlights the depth of the paint. PPF is generally less glossy and can show scratches or dullness over time.

Durability and warranty: a quality coating applied by professionals lasts years, with warranties from around 3 to 10 years depending on the product. PPF protects well against physical impacts, but the adhesive can break down over time.

Resale: a coating doesn't affect how the paint is assessed when you sell. With PPF, buyers often ask for it to be removed to inspect the paint, and the adhesive can affect the paint underneath, sometimes needing correction after removal.

Repairs: light swirls in a coating can be corrected with fine polishes. PPF is harder to repair; heat can soften light scratches, but the film thins over time.

Which is better for you?

It comes down to whether you value a high-gloss finish and easy cleaning (ceramic coating) or maximum physical protection against chips (PPF). Whichever you choose, use a quality product and have it applied by experienced professionals.
