Caravan Protection Cost: What Affects the Price?

The factors that decide what caravan paint protection costs: size, type of van, condition, preparation, surfaces coated and access, plus how to get an accurate quote.

Caravan Protection Cost: What Affects the Price?

How much does caravan protection cost? It's one of the first questions caravan owners ask, and it's a fair one. The honest answer is that it depends on the van, and two vans that look similar in a photo can need very different amounts of work.

Rather than quote a figure that might not apply to your van, this guide explains the factors that decide the price of caravan protection, what you should expect to be included, and how to get an accurate quote quickly.

Why caravan protection is always quoted

A car ceramic coating can be priced fairly simply, because cars fall into a few standard sizes. Caravans don't. They range from small pop-tops to large off-road vans, fifth-wheelers and full-size motorhomes. Their condition varies just as much: a van fresh off the dealer's yard needs far less preparation than one that's spent five summers parked side-on to the sun.

That's why we, and most reputable installers, quote each van individually. It means you pay for the work your van actually needs, not an average.

1. Size and length

The biggest factor is how much surface there is to prepare and coat. A longer, taller van has more wall area, a bigger front and rear, and usually more fittings to work around. A 22-foot van and a 14-foot van are very different jobs.

2. Type of van

Different van types bring different challenges.

  • Pop-tops and camper trailers have less wall area, but often more canvas, seals and fittings.
  • Standard touring vans are the most common and the most straightforward.
  • Off-road vans often have checkerplate, stone guards, toolboxes and extra fittings to work around.
  • Fifth-wheelers are tall, with large front caps and slide-outs.
  • Motorhomes combine a vehicle cab with a living body, and are often the tallest of all.

Height matters, too. Work above head height needs platforms and more care, which adds time.

3. Condition of the surface

This is often the factor that varies most. A coating locks in whatever is under it, so the surface has to be clean and sound first.

  • A new van usually needs a thorough wash and decontamination only.
  • A van with black streaks needs them removed before coating. Our guide on how to remove black streaks from a caravan explains why some streaks stain the surface.
  • A van with oxidation needs machine polishing to remove the chalky layer and bring back the colour. Heavier oxidation means more time. Read more in our guide to caravan oxidation.
  • Damaged decals, perished sealant or crazed windows may need attention before coating, or may be best left out of the coated areas.

4. What surfaces are coated

Some jobs cover the walls only. Others include the front and rear, windows, trims, checkerplate and other surfaces where suitable. The more surfaces included, the more product and time the job takes. A good installer will explain what's included and what isn't.

5. The product used

Coatings vary a lot in quality, durability and cost. A caravan-specific coating from a reputable maker costs more than a generic sealant, but it lasts far longer. When comparing quotes, always check what product is being used and whether it's a true coating or a short-term sealant. We explain the differences in caravan ceramic coating vs wax and graphene vs ceramic coating for caravans.

6. Access and location

Mobile installers come to you, which saves you towing the van anywhere. Access still affects the job.

  • Water and power need to be available near the van.
  • Enough space to walk and set up platforms all the way around the van makes the work faster.
  • Undercover or shaded locations are easier to work in, because coatings shouldn't be applied to hot panels in direct sun.
  • Distance from the installer's base can also play a part.

7. Add-ons

Some owners add extra work at the same time, such as a full wash and coating of the tow vehicle. Combining jobs can be more efficient than booking them separately. We coat cars, 4WDs and utes with Gtechniq ceramic coating.

Dealer package vs independent: comparing prices

If you've been offered a protection package with a new van, compare like with like. Ask what product is used, what preparation is done, which surfaces are covered and what the warranty requires. A cheaper package that's really a quick sealant isn't a like-for-like comparison with a properly applied coating. Our guide to caravan dealer protection packages lists the questions to ask.

What should be included in a good quote

Whatever the price, a good quote for caravan protection should make these clear:

  • The product being used, by name.
  • The preparation included: wash, decontamination, streak removal and polishing.
  • The surfaces being coated.
  • How long the job will take.
  • Aftercare advice and any warranty, including who provides it and what it requires.
  • What you need to provide, such as water, power and access.

Is caravan protection worth the cost?

For most owners who keep their van outdoors, yes. Protection keeps the finish bright, makes washing far quicker and helps the van hold its value. It also costs far less than repairing heavy oxidation or repainting later. Caravan protection cost FAQs

Why won't you put caravan protection prices online?

Because every van is different. A price based on an average van would be too high for some and too low for others. Quoting each van individually means you pay for the work your van actually needs.

How long does caravan protection take?

It depends on the size and condition of the van. A new van that needs only a wash, decontamination and coating takes less time than an older van that needs black streaks removed and oxidation corrected first. Your quote will tell you how long to expect.

Is it cheaper to protect a new caravan than an older one?

Usually, yes, because a new van needs less preparation. Protecting a van early also saves money later, because it prevents the oxidation and staining that take time to correct.

Do I need to be home while the work is done?

Not necessarily. As long as we have access to the van, water and power, and you're contactable, the work can go ahead while you're at work or elsewhere.

Does the quote include removing black streaks and oxidation?

A proper quote should include all the preparation your van needs, based on its condition. That's why photos are important: they show us what preparation is required, so the price you're quoted is the price you pay.

Can I get a quote without photos?

We can give you a general idea, but photos give an accurate price. Clear photos of each side, the front, the rear and close-ups of problem areas are the quickest way to a firm quote.

What payment options are available?

We accept cash, card and Afterpay, paid when the job is done.

Do you protect motorhomes and camper trailers too?

Yes. We protect caravans, motorhomes, camper trailers and fifth-wheelers. Each type is quoted on its size, condition and the surfaces to be coated.

Wrapping up

The cost of caravan protection depends on the size and type of van, its condition, which surfaces are coated, the product used and access to the van. Because those vary so much, every van should be quoted individually. A clear quote tells you exactly what product is used, what preparation is included and what's covered, so you can compare options properly.
