Headlight Restoration: How It Works and How Long It Lasts
Why headlights go cloudy and yellow, how professional headlight restoration works, how long the results last, and when restoration won't help.

Cloudy, yellow headlights make any car look older than it is, and they don't just look bad. A hazy lens scatters light, so you see less at night and other drivers get more glare. The good news is that most cloudy headlights can be restored without replacing them.
Why headlights go cloudy
Modern headlight lenses are made of polycarbonate plastic with a thin UV coating from the factory. Years of sun break that coating down. Once it's gone, the plastic itself oxidises and turns yellow and hazy. Road grit, harsh car wash chemicals and heat from the bulbs speed it up. Cars parked outside every day in Sydney usually show it first.
How professional restoration works
- Masking. The surrounding paint and trims are taped off.
- Wet sanding. The damaged, oxidised layer is removed with progressively finer grits until the lens is evenly smooth.
- Machine polishing. The lens is polished back to full clarity.
- UV protection. A UV-protective sealant goes on to replace the factory coating and slow the yellowing from coming back.
On a typical car it takes about an hour, and we do it at your home or work.
How long does headlight restoration last?
With a proper UV sealant, the results typically last years, especially if the car is often parked in the shade. The quick fixes are different. Toothpaste, bug spray and polishing alone make the lens look better for a few weeks, because they only smooth the surface without removing the damaged layer or adding UV protection.
When restoration won't help
- Cracks in the lens
- Moisture or condensation inside the headlight
- Haze or damage on the inside of the lens
- Peeling chrome or reflectors inside the unit
In these cases the headlight usually needs replacing. We'll tell you honestly if that's the situation.
Keeping headlights clear
- Park in the shade or under cover where you can.
- Wash with a pH-neutral car wash, not harsh degreasers.
- Have the lenses coated when you get a ceramic coating on the paint.
Headlight restoration is a popular add-on to a presale detail, because it makes a big difference to how a car looks in sale photos.
Common questions
How long does headlight restoration take?
About an hour on a typical car.
How long do restored headlights stay clear?
With a UV sealant, typically years, especially if the car is often parked in the shade.
Does toothpaste fix cloudy headlights?
Only for a few weeks. It doesn't remove the damaged layer or add UV protection, so the haze comes back quickly.
Can cloudy headlights fail a roadworthy inspection?
Lenses that are badly clouded can affect light output, which may be an issue. Restoration usually brings the clarity back.
