How Long Does a Car Detail Take?
How long a mini, full or presale car detail takes, how long ceramic coating and paint correction take, and what makes a job take longer.

One of the first things people ask when they book a detail is how long it'll take. The honest answer is that it depends on the package, the size of the vehicle and its condition. Here's what to expect for each service, and what can make a job run longer.
Typical times on site
- Mini detail: 3 to 4 hours. A proper clean inside and out for cars in good shape.
- Full detail: 5 to 6.5 hours. Includes shampooing seats, carpets and mats.
- Presale detail: 7 to 9 hours. Everything in the full detail plus roof lining, leather care, clay bar and a machine polish.
- Ceramic coating: about a day on a new car, and up to two days on a used car because the paint is corrected first.
- Paint correction: one to two days, depending on the paint.
- Headlight restoration: about an hour.
These times are for hatches and sedans in normal condition.
What makes a detail take longer?
- Size. SUVs, 4WDs, 7-seaters and vans have more surface inside and out.
- Condition. Heavy staining, sand, spills or a car that hasn't been cleaned in a long time take longer.
- Mould. Mould removal needs extra steps to treat the cause, not just the surface.
- Weather. Coatings and polishing need dry conditions, so jobs are planned around the forecast.
Why a proper detail can't be rushed
Shampooed seats and carpets need time to extract the dirt and moisture. Paint needs careful washing and decontamination before any polish or coating, or you lock in the grime. A detail that's finished in an hour usually means steps were skipped.
