What is Graphene Coating, and How Does It Work?

You've spent time waxing the car, only to see the shine fade after a couple of rain showers. Graphene coatings are one of the newer ways to protect paint, making it easier to clean and keeping the gloss for longer.

Graphene is a single sheet of carbon atoms, known for being strong and flexible. Used in a car coating, it adds a tough layer to the surface that enhances gloss and protects against dirt, light scratches and water spots.

How it works

A graphene coating forms a strong hydrophobic layer that repels water, dirt and other contaminants. It also fills tiny imperfections in the paint surface, which adds gloss. Water beads up and rolls off, reducing water spots and making cleaning easier.

Graphene vs. other paint protection

Graphene coatings last far longer than wax, which needs regular reapplication. How it's applied

• Wash and dry: remove all old wax, grease and dust, then dry completely.
• Clay bar: lift embedded contamination for a smooth surface.
• Prep: wipe the paint down to remove any residue.
• Apply: work in small sections with an applicator, spreading evenly, and allow it to bond.
• Level and buff: wipe off excess with a clean microfibre cloth for a smooth, glossy finish.

Professional or DIY?

For the best result, professional application is the safer route, especially when paint correction is needed first. If you're comfortable with careful prep and have the time, DIY products are available.

Graphene coating vs ceramic coating

Most graphene coatings are actually ceramic coatings with graphene added. The graphene is designed to make the surface slicker and to reduce water spotting, especially on dark cars and in hot climates. In practice, the result depends far more on the paint preparation and the quality of the product than on the label. A well-applied quality ceramic coating will outperform a poorly applied graphene one every time.

Is graphene coating worth it?

If you want a long-lasting, low-maintenance finish, a professionally applied coating of either type is worth it.
