Motorhome Paint Protection: How to Protect a Motorhome or RV
Motorhomes and RVs face sun, salt, bugs and road grime every trip. Here's how paint protection works for motorhomes and what to look for.

A motorhome is a big investment, and unlike a caravan it carries its engine, cab and living space all in one. It covers more kilometres, collects more bugs on the front, and often spends long stretches parked in the sun between trips. Paint protection keeps it looking good and makes cleaning far easier.
What motorhome finishes are up against
- UV. Large flat panels and the roof take the full force of the sun, which fades paint and graphics and makes fibreglass chalky.
- Bugs and road film. The cab front and over-cab section collect bug residue that etches if left on.
- Black streaks. Grime washes off the roof and runs down the walls, especially below windows and awning rails.
- Salt. Coastal touring leaves a salty film that dulls the finish and attacks metal trim.
- Tree sap and droppings at campsites and in storage.
Paint protection options
Wax and polish
Cheap and quick, but it lasts weeks, not years. On a vehicle this size, that means a lot of ladder time.
Paint protection film
Clear film is excellent against stone chips on the front, but it's expensive to cover an entire motorhome. Many owners use film only on high-impact areas.
Ceramic coating
A ceramic coating bonds to the paint, gelcoat and decals and forms a hard, slick layer that lasts years. It's the most practical way to protect the whole body. With the right product it also protects the interior.
How a motorhome is protected
The process is similar to a caravan ceramic coating, with a little more attention on the cab. The whole vehicle is washed and decontaminated, black streaks and bug residue are removed, oxidised areas are machine polished, and the coating is applied panel by panel. With OptiVAN, the interior is protected as part of the same package.
Do motorhomes qualify for a warranty?
OptiVAN's lifetime warranty covers both the exterior and interior protection on caravans no older than 5 years. Talk to us about your motorhome's age and model when you ask for a quote, and we'll explain exactly what applies.
Looking after a protected motorhome
- Clean bugs off the front after long drives, before they bake on.
- Rinse after coastal trips to remove salt.
- Use a pH-neutral wash and a soft brush.
- Keep it shaded or covered between trips if you can.
Our guides on protecting a van from the sun and long-term storage apply to motorhomes too.
